The pitch in Almelo was artificial for most of the ground's life. It opened in 1999 as the first stadium in the Netherlands laid with a synthetic surface, and from 2003 the club played every home match on kunstgras. Eredivisie rules now require natural or hybrid grass, so Heracles installed a hybrid field, real grass stitched through with artificial fibres, ready for the 2024–25 season.

What stands there today is not what the club wanted to build. The plan was a 15,000-seat ground called the Ten Cate Arena, with 50,000 square metres of retail attached. The province of Overijssel refused it, arguing for the city centre, and Heracles rebuilt what it already had instead: a second tier added to the stands, the south and west sides extended, between 2014 and 2015. The city of Almelo lent roughly €8 million towards the work. An earlier expansion in 2005, after promotion to the Eredivisie, had taken the stands down to pitch level.

The Twentse derby fills it. On 30 March 2025, 12,161 people watched Heracles beat FC Twente 2–1 — the highest figure recorded here, past a mark also set against Twente, in August 2015, weeks after the rebuild finished. Both records belong to the same fixture, a derby with no love lost.

The name has moved with the sponsors: Polman Stadion from 1999, then Erve Asito from 2019, the local word for a homestead kept from the site itself, and Asito Stadion since 2024.
