Estadio ABANCA Balaídos
The river came first. The Lagares runs past the western edge of the ground, and when Виго rebuilt Балаидос for the 1982 World Cup the old Rio stand came down, the remaining three were lifted, and work that began in 1980 left the arena with the shape it kept for three decades.
Балаидос opened on 30 December 1928, with «Сельта» beating «Реал Унион» from Ирун 7:0. The municipality of Виго still owns it; the club took possession in 1945.
Its record crowd belongs to a division it no longer plays in: 45 000 in 1982, for a Segunda match against «Хетафе». That figure was possible because most of those people stood. Seating every place in 1996 cut capacity to 31 800, further work in 2012 took it to 30 000, and temporary stands installed in 2025 to meet UEFA requirements for the Europa League left it lower again.
The current rebuild, «Нуэво Балаидос», has run since 2015 and takes the stands one at a time, so the ground has spent a decade half building site. The Marcador end reopened in June 2023 at a cost of 16,6 million euros; the Rio stand followed the same year. Work on the Gol stand — 26,3 million euros under a 2024 agreement — started in 2025 and is the last phase, due around 2027. Total spend passes 60 million euros, and the athletics track goes with it.
Three Italy group matches in 1982 produced two draws and a goalless one. Испания beat Германия here 3:2 on 14 November 2014.
