Estadio Abanca-Riazor

Riazor sits with its back to the Atlantic, and the club has never let anyone forget it: the current name change, in 2017, folded a sponsorship deal with the bank Abanca into a debt refinancing package.

The ground opened in 1944. It had already been through one facelift for the 1982 World Cup. RC Deportivo has called it home since that same year, 1944, under a free-use agreement with the municipality.

Riazor's biggest night on a football pitch had nothing to do with Deportivo: in 1947, Real Madrid beat Espanyol 9-0 here in the Copa del Rey final, still the club's ninth cup won that way. The Spanish national side has used it sparingly but recently, beating Belgium 5-0 in 2009 qualifying and Iceland by the same score in a 2022 friendly.

Off the pitch, the ground has hosted more than football. In 1993 it staged the Concierto de los Mil Años, pulling Bob Dylan, Sting, Robert Plant, Neil Young and Chuck Berry onto the same bill, a decade after Miguel Ríos and Julio Iglesias played the reopened stadium in 1983.

A Coruña put Riazor forward as a candidate venue for the 2030 World Cup, then withdrew it in March 2026, citing the scale of renovation the bid would have required. The pitch itself was relaid in 2024 with a hybrid surface, stitched synthetic fibres through natural turf, a detail the club had to confirm publicly in 2025 after suggestions the grass wasn't real.
