Local fans know it as the Castelo do Dragão — the Dragon's Castle — a nod to the club crest rather than the ground's size, since Atlético Goianiense has never shared it with a neighbour. The land came from the state government in 1942, granted after a push from the club's first president, Antônio Accioly, whose name the stadium carries once it opened five years later.

Money, not architecture, shaped its more recent history. When Atlético rebuilt the ground for the 2017–2018 campaign, club president Adson Batista said the roughly 9 million reais came from player sales rather than outside investment, and the reopening against Coritiba doubled as proof the work had held. A further round of changes in 2020 — a VAR room, wider stands, LED floodlights — brought the Accioly up to Série A standard and pushed its official capacity to 12,500, though the club's own website still lists 12,089.

That lower figure turned out to matter: it is also the exact crowd the ground recorded for its attendance record, set at the 2022 Goiás state final against Goiás, edging past the mark Atlético had put up months earlier hosting Flamengo in the Série A. Long before any of that, in 1996, Shakira played the Accioly on her Pies Descalzos tour.
