Rondinelly once captained the side and now watches it from the touchline, a link between the club's playing generations that Atlético Goianiense supporters in Goiânia still point to when asked who represents the Dragão. The nickname itself, Dragão, and the crest's red and black have carried the club since it took shape in the state of Goiás, formally on 2 April 1937.

Domestically the club has spent more time defining Goiás football than Brazilian football as a whole. It has won the Campeonato Goiano 18 times, starting in 1944 with the very first state title ever awarded, and returning to the top of the table as recently as 2024. National honours sit alongside that list rather than above it: two Série C titles, in 1990 and 2008, and one Série B crown, in 2016.

Home matches are played at the Estádio Antônio Accioli, known locally as the Castelo do Dragão, though its exact capacity depends on which source is asked — the club's own figure runs to 12,089 seats, while other databases list 12,500.

The Dragão's cabinet also holds smaller regional pieces: the Copa Goiás, won twice, in 1968 and 1998, and the Torneio Início five times between 1944 and 1984. None of that, though, has translated into a national championship. In 2024 the club dropped out of Série A and went back down to Série B, a level it has yet to climb clear of for good.
