The stadium stands in the Santa Úrsula Coapa neighbourhood of Coyoacán, Mexico City. Its address is Calzada de Tlalpan 3465. It has been the home of Club América since it opened on May 29, 1966.
The ground is defined by what it has hosted. It is the only stadium to have staged two FIFA World Cup finals, in 1970 and 1986. It also held the football final at the 1968 Summer Olympics.
The capacity has shifted over time. For the 1970 World Cup, it held 107,247. For 1986, 114,600. The record attendance remains 119,853 for a friendly between Mexico and Brazil in 1968. The current official figure is 87,523, adjusted to 80,824 for the 2026 tournament.
The pitch is a GrassMaster hybrid turf, installed during renovations completed in 2026. The stadium is owned by Club América. It has been known by several names: Estadio Guillermo Cañedo between 1997 and 1998, and currently Estadio Banorte under sponsorship, with the temporary name Estadio Ciudad de México for the 2026 World Cup.
