It came down in 2026 to make way for a 20,000-seat arena with a hybrid pitch.

Before football, the plot was earmarked for a hospital, the Hospital del Norte, which was never built there. What opened instead, on 4 July 1909 , belonged to Montevideo Wanderers, and the first fixture was a friendly against Dublin. No source names the architect or the firm that put it up.

Internationals arrived within weeks. On 19 September 1909, 9,000 watched Uruguay draw 2:2 with Argentina in the Copa Newton. On 15 August 1910, with 8,000 in, Uruguay beat the same opponents 3:1 — the match in which the national side first took the field in the pale blue celeste, a colour chosen in honour of the Argentine club River Plate.

Ownership moved with the politics. In August 1938 the government of Alfredo Baldomir transferred the ground to Liverpool by decree 1130/38, and the club bought it outright from the state in 2000. Wanderers later found a way back into it, and from then on the two shared the address.

Alongside the domestic calendar, the ground took Copa Libertadores ties and concerts, on the same natural grass that had been there from the start.
