The ground has seen its share of financial ruin. The previous attempt to modernise the club in the mid-1980s left the club in debt and with a trip to the Third Division, but the project finished between 1997 and 1999 succeeded in creating the uniform shape visible today.

Inside, the atmosphere is intimate. The club has not won a European away match in the south of Europe for some time, but the local support here does not need to look far for pride. The ground hosted the second leg of the 2017 Copa del Rey semi-final, where Alavés defeated Celta de Vigo to reach their first-ever final, a night the old head settled them down after a difficult previous season. The pitch cut up badly during some matches in the 2001 UEFA Cup run, but the surface remains natural grass.

The stadium celebrated its 100th anniversary on April 27, 2024, a milestone that has carved them open discussions about whether to keep the existing facility or build a new one.

It is not a temple of football , but it is the only ground in town. The club’s president announced plans to expand the capacity to 32,000 seats, but those plans have been put on indefinite hold. The fans know that cup football has its own rules , and they are content to stay in the bowl.
