Stadium
Estádio de São Luís
The ground carries the name of the district around it, Сан-Луиш, and the district in turn took its name from the church standing nearby.
Work began in 1922, and the first matches were played in May of the following year, months before anyone declared the place open. The formal opening followed on 1 December 1923.
What has changed most since is not the pitch — still natural grass — but the number of people allowed to stand on the terraces around it. In earlier decades the ground took crowds of fifteen to seventeen thousand. Successive rebuilds, and safety rules that tightened around them, brought that figure down to the 7,000 listed today.
It remains the home of Спортинг Клубе Фаренсе, in the city of Фару.
