Estadio de Vallecas
Madrid, Spain
Formerly: Nuevo Estadio de Vallecas, Estadio Teresa Rivero
The Estadio de Vallecas does not sit on a sporting estate. It stands in the Puente de Vallecas district, built by the club itself on land it purchased. Construction began in 1972, marked by worker strikes over salary disputes, and the ground opened to the public in 1976.
In the mid-1990s, UEFA all-seater rules cut the capacity. Around 2011, the removal of fences separating the pitch from the crowd reduced the number of seats further to 14,708.
The club financed the project and managed the construction, and the ground has served as a home since the mid-1970s. The stadium is what it was built to be: a ground for the district, not a monument.
