Estádio do Arruda

Estádio do Arruda carries a mayor's name on paper, José do Rego Maciel, but almost nobody in Recife calls it that. The ground goes by its neighbourhood, Arruda, and by nicknames that say more about how locals see it than any plaque does: Mundão do Arruda and Colosso do Arruda, the giant, the colossus.

It earned that reputation early. The stadium opened on 4 June 1972 with a match that read like a statement of intent, Santa Cruz beating Brazil's amateur national side 1–0 on its own new turf. Twenty-two years later, on 23 March 1994, the Colosso showed what it was built for: a Brazil–Argentina friendly drew 101,670 people through the gates, a record the ground still holds and one that dwarfs its official capacity of 60,044.

Santa Cruz owns the stadium outright, a rarer arrangement in Brazilian football than tenancy, and it shows in how the club has managed the pitch. Between 2018 and 2019 the grass was replaced with Bermuda Celebration and Bermuda TifWay varieties, a deliberate upgrade rather than routine maintenance.

The address places it firmly in its own patch of the city, Avenida Beberibe in the Arruda district, and the name has never changed in over five decades, official or otherwise. For a ground that once pulled in six figures for a friendly, that continuity of identity, one club, one name, one neighbourhood, is the thing that stands out.
