The ground took eleven years to build and opened on 8 December 1981, holding 8,560. Four years later, for the visit of Vitória SC in 1985, the terraces reportedly took up to 12,500 — a figure the safety rules of the following decades made impossible to repeat.

Promotion to the Primeira Liga in 2000/01 forced the reckoning. Seats went into the standing sections, and the capacity that had once been the ground's boast fell to 6,230 , where it has stayed. The line has barely moved since.

The club that built it did not last. C.D. Aves went bankrupt in 2022, and the stadium kept the name — Estádio do Clube Desportivo das Aves — after the tenant had gone. It is also known locally as the Estádio Municipal de Vila das Aves, which is the more accurate description of what it now is: a municipal ground in a parish of Santo Tirso, in the Porto district, occupied since 2023 by AVS Futebol SAD, the successor entity, playing in Liga Portugal 2.
