Estadio do Mar
Matosinhos, Portugal
The Estádio do Mar sits in Matosinhos. It was not built by a city council but by the local fishermen, who paid for it by selling baskets of sardines.
The stadium was opened in 1964 with a match against SL Benfica, which Leixões lost 0–4. The first goal was scored by José Augusto Torres, a Benfica legend. The eastern stand was replaced in 1988, bringing the total capacity to 9,730. More recent renovations began in the 2020/21 season, with four new stands planned in phases. The northern stand was demolished to make way for a viaduct over the A28 motorway, part of a wider urban redevelopment project. The viaduct and road works cost around 3.8 million euros.
The pitch is natural grass. The stadium has never had an official sponsor name, though locals call it Velhinho do Mar (Little Old Man of the Sea). During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was offered as a field hospital. The official website is managed by Leixões SC SAD.
