Estadio do Maritimo
Funchal, Portugal
Formerly: Campo dos Barreiros, Estádio dos Barreiros, Estádio do Professor Marcelo Caetano
The ground carries the weight of a long history in Madeira. Originally called Campo dos Barreiros , it opened in 1927 before the current concrete structure was completed in 1957. During the Estado Novo era it bore the political name Estádio do Professor Marcelo Caetano, a title it shed following the Carnation Revolution of 1974. The 2013 rebuilding, driven by UEFA Europa League requirements, transformed it into an all-seater facility.
The stadium hosted a match between Portugal and Sweden in 2017, one of several international fixtures played after the reconstruction. The stadium’s location on Rua do Dr. Pita places it within the urban fabric of Funchal, accessible but dominated by the surrounding terrain.
