It is a functional space rather than a spectacle, built for a tournament that has long passed but still hosts one of the continent’s most significant away fixtures.

The stadium was opened on July 21, 1994, specifically to host matches for the 1995 Copa América, when Brazil beat the United States 1–0 in the semi-final. It stands as one of the few venues outside the capital to stage a continental final, which it did on October 28, 2023, when Fortaleza defeated LDU 1–0 in front of a crowd that filled the tiers. The capacity is generally cited as 22,000, a figure that sits comfortably between the actual attendance and the higher numbers sometimes listed.

The playing surface is natural grass, maintained by groundskeepers who level it with sand and keep it sown; synthetic turf is reserved for the locker rooms and corridors. The venue has also hosted concerts and youth finals, though the matchday routine is what defines it.
