Estadio El Cobre

The ground holds more people than the town around it. Estadio El Cobre sits in El Salvador, a Codelco mining settlement in the commune of Diego de Almagro, deep in the Atacama, and its 11,240 seats comfortably outnumber the residents.

It has not always been that size. Work began on 27 July 1979, the ground opened on 1 June 1980 with a 1-1 draw between Cobresal and Independiente de Cauquenes, and the stands then took 7,000 to 8,000. Before Cobresal entered the Copa Libertadores in 1986, CONMEBOL requirements pushed the figure to 20,752. Today's capacity is little more than half of that, and no terrace was pulled down to get there — the count was revised, the bowl stayed.

Floodlights went up in 1999, opening the ground to evening kick-offs and television; the first was against Universidad de Chile on 8 May 1999.

Keeping natural grass alive is the standing problem, and in 2022 the club installed automatic irrigation built around water efficiency. The toilets and medical area were refurbished in 2024.

On 26 April 2015 Cobresal beat Barnechea 3-2 here to win the Clausura and put the club's first star on the shirt. The ground also takes Copa Chile ties from the last 16 onwards.

Codelco owns the stadium, and in May 2025, on the club's 46th anniversary, the name became Estadio El Cobre Codelco Salvador, first used on 17 May 2025.
