The stadium stands in Luque, Paraguay, as the home of Sportivo Luqueño, though its current form only dates to 1999. The site has hosted football since 1921, but the layout visible now was conceived for the 1999 Copa América. The architect Amado Peralta designed the bowl that replaced the original grounds, with the opening ceremony taking place in April of that year.

The stadium hosted the quarter-final between Argentina and Colombia, a match where Argentina lost 3-0 and Martín Palermo missed three penalties. Jhonnier Montaño scored at the age of 16, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the competition’s history. Argentina also played Ecuador here, winning 3-1. The venue continued to host youth tournaments, including the Sudamericano Sub-20 in 2007.

A major renovation began in 2024 under CONMEBOL’s Reinvestment in South American Football programme. The project added a 1,700-capacity VIP box and upgraded the seating, lighting, and facilities. The capacity is listed as 30,000, though one source claims a record of 38,000.
