The Estadio General Santander went up for a reason no other Colombian ground shares: the centenary of Francisco de Paula Santander's death, marked by presidential decree under Eduardo Santos. It opened on 8 May 1940, in Cúcuta's Caobos district, on the edge of the park that carries the general's name.

What followed complicates the record more than most stadium histories. Work on the ground continued well past that inauguration, and later accounts point to 1948 as the year it was actually finished for public use — a gap of eight years between the ceremony and the completed structure that few grounds of the period had to live through.

The pitch itself was brought up to FIFA dimensions, 105 by 68 metres, and in 2008 the club and federation installed a proper drainage system beneath the natural grass, a modernisation that older venues in the region went without. The ground belongs not to Cúcuta Deportivo but to the Federación Colombiana de Fútbol, which runs it as federation property rather than a club-owned asset — an arrangement that shapes how it is maintained and who ultimately answers for it.
