The ground sits between two narrow passages.

The roof was added later. Between 1995 and 1997, the club closed the venue for a renovation that installed a translucent covering over every seat, making it the first fully covered stadium in Argentina.

The moat that once separated the pitch from the stands was removed in 2022 as part of a renovation project that also included repairs to the concrete and an upgrade to the drainage and electrical systems. The main playing field remains natural grass, though synthetic turf has been laid in peripheral areas around the bench zones.

The stadium hosted the opening ceremony and football matches of the 1951 Pan American Games. It has staged numerous finals, including the second leg of the 1967 Intercontinental Cup against Celtic Glasgow, a match that drew a record 120,000 spectators.
