It opened on 26 August 1952, built under the Plan Serena, the urban programme pushed through by president Gabriel González Videla, with the National Sports Institute involved from the start.

The ground sat largely untouched for six decades before a full rebuild between 2013 and 2015, carried out by Copasa Chile under a team of local architects. That tournament remains the stadium's high point: it hosted three group games, including Argentina's 1-0 win over Uruguay on 16 June 2015, which still stands as the attendance record at 17,014.

Ownership has stayed with the municipality throughout — the Ilustre Municipalidad de La Serena runs the venue directly rather than through a club or a private operator, and books it as freely for concerts as for football. La Ley played there in 1995; Inti-Illimani, Quilapayún and Illapu shared the stage in 2011 for the first time in 23 years; Chayanne drew around 14,000 in November 2018. The pitch was re-turfed with ryegrass as recently as March 2026, ahead of a run of dates that includes a Cris MJ concert.
