Rafael Viñoly signed the design, and the timing tells its own story: work ran from 1976 to 1978, the bowl rising against a two-year clock set by a World Cup that never left much room for delay. It opened on 14 May 1978, weeks before the tournament kicked off, and the following month held 34,954 for Argentina against Yugoslavia — the ground's largest recorded crowd, from an era when the terraces still counted standing fans rather than seats.

The name changed once, and not for football reasons. Built and opened as Estadio Ciudad de Mendoza, it was renamed in 1982 after the Falklands War, in memory of the Argentine servicemen who fought there.

What sets it apart from most stadiums its age is what it isn't: nobody's home. Godoy Cruz, Gimnasia y Esgrima and Independiente Rivadavia have all played here at different points, and all three eventually left for grounds of their own. What's left belongs to the provincial government, not a club, and now serves mainly the national team and the occasional major tournament passing through Mendoza rather than a fixed weekly crowd.
