The Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro has changed name three times, and still ended up as the fixed point around which the city's sport revolves. It opened in 1955 as Estadio Gustavo Rojas Pinilla, named for the president of the day, then took the name of the city's own founder, San Bonifacio, before settling on Manuel Murillo Toro, the writer and two-time head of state whose name it now carries.

What happened here on 18 November 1981 shaped everything that followed. A barrier gave way on the western stand during a match against Deportivo Cali, and eighteen people died in the fall. The ground was rebuilt without its second tier, the stands brought down to a single level, and the site has carried that history quietly ever since.

Deportes Tolima have played their continental football here — Libertadores nights against sides like Corinthians in February 2011, the match remembered locally as Ronaldo's last as a professional. National Games in 1970 and again in 2015 pushed the capacity outward each time, from an original 3,000 to the 30,000 it holds now. The most recent overhaul, ahead of the 2021 South American Under-20 Championship, added a sports museum, La Gloria, alongside new dressing rooms and press facilities — the kind of work that turns a stadium built in fifty-five days into one that still gets asked to host.

Deportes Tolima remain the tenants, and CONMEBOL's old complaints about the floodlights have since been answered with newer, brighter rigs. The pitch is natural Bermuda grass, tended under the Institute of Urban Sport and Recreation of Ibagué.
