Estadio Monumental

The club built this one itself. Universitario de Deportes drew up the project in 1989, bought the land in Ate in 1994, and handed the work to the Peruvian firm Gremco S.A. with Progreso International, under the Uruguayan architect Walter Lavalleja Sarries. What went up on Avenida Javier Prado Este is the reason nobody in Lima calls it by its formal name: the Coloso de Ate, a bowl for 80,093 people.

That capacity is why CONMEBOL keeps coming back. The 2019 Copa Libertadores final was played here, River Plate against Flamengo, settled 0-1 in front of 78,573. Six years later the fixture returned with the same winner: Palmeiras 0-1 Flamengo, before a crowd of 70,000. Peru's national side has used the ground too, including qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup.

Between the football, the pitch has been boarded over for concerts often enough that the stadium has a second reputation in the city. Guns N' Roses played here in 2010 and again in 2016, Paul McCartney in 2011 to 50,000, Roger Waters in 2018, with Maná and Café Tacvba the same year.

On 6 and 7 August 2024 the club marked its centenary on its own ground, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino present. The surface is natural grass. For a stretch the ground carried a sponsor's name, Estadio Monumental U Marathon, though the building has never been renamed beyond that.
