Estadio Municipal de Portimao

The most striking feature of the Estádio Municipal de Portimão is the contrast between the old and the new. Portimonense have been based here since 1937, but the ground’s identity changed abruptly in 2007. Before that year, the stadium carried the club’s own name, but a legal dispute over the land forced the municipality to take possession and rename the venue. The club stayed, but the architecture shifted to reflect the new ownership.

The current layout is the result of a long period of repair. Between 2007 and 2010, the club spent €800,000 on a drainage system and a new west stand, converting the pitch into an all-seater. That renovation initially raised the capacity to 9,544, but structural cracks found during safety inspections forced a partial reduction. A temporary stand on the north side was added in 2017 to meet the requirements for the Primeira Liga, but it was removed after the 2019/2020 season, leaving the official capacity at 4,961.

The surroundings tell a different story. The surface is natural grass. The venue has hosted a UEFA Women’s Nations League match between Portugal and England in February 2025, but for most of the year it belongs to the local club.
