Germán Becker was not built as a stadium in the usual sense. Municipal labourers raised it alongside 180 prisoners from the local jail, and the mayor who pushed the project through, Germán Becker Bäechler, gave it his name in 1993.

The rebuild, finished for the 2008 Women's Under-20 World Cup, was reopened on 5 November 2008 by President Michelle Bachelet, and the new capacity settled at 18,100 — smaller than what the old bowl once held.

Deportes Temuco play their Primera B football here. The 2019 Copa Chile final brought Colo-Colo past Universidad de Chile 2–1, and the same season's semi-final saw Colo-Colo see off Universidad Católica on penalties. The national side has used it too, beating Honduras 4–1 in a November 2018 friendly, while Chile's rugby team drew more than 10,000 through the gates for a 38–22 win over Brazil in 2013 during South American championship qualifying for the following year's World Cup.

Music has filled the ground on occasion — Los Auténticos Decadentes and Albert Hammond played a concert marking the city's 132nd anniversary in March 2013, and Amar Azul appeared there in February 2025. The stadium has no club or federation of its own behind it; it remains municipal property, run by the city of Temuco on Avenida Pablo Neruda.
