Estadio Nelson Oyarzún
Chillán, Chile
Formerly: Estadio Municipal de Chillán, Estadio Municipal Nelson Oyarzún
That history sits beneath the modern stands where Ñublense now plays.
The current structure arrived for the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, replacing a facility that had survived the 1960 earthquake. The reconstruction was thorough, bringing concrete stands and a capacity of roughly 12,000. The attention to detail in the seating is visible immediately.
Down at ground level, the atmosphere is defined by the supporters. The fans occupy the lower tiers, while the upper levels remain largely empty, exposing the green metal framework of the structure.
The playing surface is natural grass, maintained to a standard that allows for quick passing between the lines. The stadium is not large, but it is functional. It hosted a Copa Libertadores match recently, a game that ended in a draw against Boston River, a result that kept the home side in contention. The venue is not a temple of football, but it is a working ground where the local club finds its footing.
