The venue has a history that is written in the changes to its structure. For a time, temporary stands were added to increase capacity, but these were removed after the club’s relegation from the top flight, returning the ground to its current, smaller size. The surface has seen several changes over the years, with different types of turf laid to meet the requirements of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

It is not only football that takes place here. The Zaidín Rock Festival draws crowds to the same stands, and concerts by international artists have used the space. The stadium has also hosted matches for the Spain national team, including qualifiers for major tournaments. The record attendance for a domestic game is lower than the figure set during a women’s match against Atlético Madrid in 2024. The ground is located in the Zaidín district, a neighbourhood that has changed around it as the city has grown. There is no underground heating system to protect the pitch from frost; the grass must rely on its own hardiness through the winter months.
