The name over the gate has not always matched the one on old team sheets here. For decades the ground was Estadio Pedro de Heredia; in 2007 the city renamed it for Jaime Morón León, a footballer born in Cartagena who had died two years earlier.

Work on the bowl began in 1958, but it was still unfinished when the first competitions were staged there in 1960. Drainage and a press zone went in ahead of the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games, the south and north stands were finished and the ground went fully seated for the 2011 under-20 World Cup, and seating and dressing rooms were being redone again in early 2025 ahead of the South American under-17 championship.

That 2011 tournament also set the attendance record still standing: 16,042 for a Mexico–England group match, played alongside Egypt against Austria on the same afternoon.

Real Cartagena have called it home since 1971, with only brief exceptions — Atlético Bucaramanga borrowed it in 1972, Expreso Rojo Cartagena played there in 2003 and 2004, and Junior de Barranquilla has used it twice, once for a Copa Libertadores tie in 2017 and again in 2026 while their own stadium is rebuilt. Outside football, the Metro Concierto Histórico festival has brought Carlos Vives, Daddy Yankee and Silvestre Dangond through, with J Balvin announced for 2026. A fight outside the gates before a match against Atlético de Cali in July 2018 left one person dead.
