Estadio Pedro Bidegain

Buenos Aires has no shortage of stadiums, but only one carries a name to make up for the one it lost. Estadio Pedro Bidegain stands on the ground where San Lorenzo's old Gasómetro once stood before the club sold it off in 1979 under military rule and spent over a decade playing away from home. That absence explains why supporters still call the current ground the Nuevo Gasómetro — new in construction, but carrying the weight of the one that was taken.

The rebuilt stadium opened on 16 December 1993 with a friendly against Chile's Universidad Católica, won 2-1. Since then it has hosted three continental finals: the 2001 Copa Mercosur against Flamengo, the 2002 Copa Sudamericana against Atlético Nacional, and the 2014 Copa Libertadores against Paraguay's Nacional — all won on home soil, giving the ground a reputation as a ground where visiting sides arrive already under pressure.

The natural grass pitch sits inside a bowl built for just under 48,000, tight enough that the crowd noise carries onto the pitch in a way newer, more spread-out arenas rarely manage. Matches here have also drawn attention for crowd trouble and arrests around fixtures, a recurring theme in Argentine football that this stadium has not been spared from.
