Stadium
Estadio Pedro Marrero
Havana, Cuba
Formerly: Gran Estadio Cervecería Tropical, La Tropical
It opened on October 10, 1930, by the brewery magnate Julio Blanco Herrera. He called it the Gran Estadio Cervecería Tropical. It stood empty for a decade after a flood in the 1920s before the new identity settled.
The capacity of 28,000 has remained steady through the decades. The pitch is natural grass, surrounded by a synthetic track, and it is the home of CF Ciudad de La Habana and the Cuba national team. The stadium is the only one left in the Alturas del Bosque district of the Playa municipality, which means it holds the local history. It was rebuilt in 2002 to a new look, but the core structure resembles the old railway arch.
When the Carnival started in Havana, the crowds did not come for football. They came for the athletics and the games. The ground survived the changes in the city. It still holds the name of the brewery, even if the beer is no longer made there. The concrete has not changed, and the track is still synthetic.
