Estadio Presidente Vargas
Fortaleza, Brazil
Formerly: Estádio Municipal
Estádio Presidente Vargas is a ground in the Benfica neighbourhood of Fortaleza that has been through more than one life. The concrete stands replaced the wooden ones that once sat on the site, and the Art Deco entrance has been kept as a reminder of that era. The pitch is natural grass, which made it the first in the city to offer such a surface when it opened in 1941.
It was the largest stadium in Fortaleza until Arena Castelão opened in 1973, but it has since found a rhythm as the home of Ceará SC for domestic cup competitions and lower-stakes league fixtures. The club still reserves the bigger venue for matches that demand a larger crowd.
The capacity sits at 20,268 according to the CBF CNEF registry from 2012, though an unconfirmed record from 1971 suggests a larger crowd once packed inside. The stadium is owned by the city council, and it has served purposes beyond football, including as a campaign hospital during the pandemic. The wooden stands gave way to concrete, but the character of the place remains.
The surface is natural grass.
