Clearing began on 30 March 1953, paid for by 76 members of the club's board; engineers from the Companhia de Melhoramentos do Norte do Paraná cleared the ground and put up the first changing rooms and a wooden fence. It took four years to reach a first fixture: Melhoramentos drew 2-2 with Londrina on 12 May 1957.

The club could not carry it alone. In 1961 the ground passed to Maringá's municipality, which cut three tunnels that same year and added wooden stands with floodlights in 1967. The version supporters walk into now is largely the work of 1973 to 1976, when the city — then run by Jaime Lerner, later better known as an architect and politician — replaced timber with concrete terracing. The rebuilt stands opened on 12 October 1976.

What those terraces once held is no longer possible. On 3 March 1996 a Paraná state championship match between Grêmio Maringá and Apucarana drew 34,118; Grêmio won 3-2.

Tenants have come and gone — Grêmio Maringá from the 1950s, Maringá Futebol Clube between 1995 and 1999, Galo Maringá, then Adap Galo Maringá until 2008, and Maringá Futebol Clube again since 2010. Visitors have included the USSR side with Lev Yashin, Santos with Pelé, Brazil's youth team in 2000 and Brazil's women, who won 11-0 here in 2009. Between matches the ground takes concerts and the FLIM festival.
