Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Aymá

Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Aymá sits so close to the touchline that visiting players notice it before they notice the score. Alex Lalas and Landon Donovan, both capped by the United States, have separately named it the hardest ground they ever played in the region.

It opened on 27 August 1972 and has carried the club's name — and later the name of its founder's wife — ever since.

The pitch itself changed twice. Natural grass covered it from the opening until 2003, when the club switched to artificial turf. That lasted eleven years: by 2014 the synthetic surface was worn down from hosting non-football events, and with Saprissa's own training centre now handling day-to-day sessions, the club returned to natural grass in August 2015.

The stadium has taken on continental football too, staging the 1989 CONCACAF Championship of Nations and six group-stage matches of the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, alongside Costa Rica's own CONCACAF Nations League qualifiers. Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Aymá remains the home ground of Deportivo Saprissa, and its exact street address is a small point of disagreement between sources — some place it on Avenida 69, others on Avenida 4, both at Calle 7 in San Juan de Tibás.
