The club that plays here, Luis Ángel Firpo, took its own identity onto the stadium itself, and for years the two names ran side by side before the venue settled on honouring a different figure altogether: Sergio Torres Rivera, a former club owner and president, took over the naming in 1996, and it has stayed that way since.

The origins go back further, to 1930, when the ground opened simply as Estadio Usulután — a name that placed the town before the club. That gap of over sixty years between the stadium's opening and its rededication says something about how long the ground had already served the city before anyone thought to put an owner's name on it.
