Estadio Universitario (UANL)
San Nicolás de los Garza, Mexico
Estadio Universitario sits inside the Ciudad Universitaria campus, which is the way it has always been.
It opened in 1967 and has kept its original name ever since. The seating was reduced after the 1986 FIFA World Cup, a tournament in which it hosted five matches, including the quarter-final between West Germany and Mexico. That reduction brought the capacity down to around 42,000, which is the figure used today. It also hosted the NFL American Bowl in 1996, a match between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Dallas Cowboys that drew more people than the usual football crowd.
Inside, the atmosphere is defined by yellow and blue. The stadium has hosted concerts, from Queen in 1981 to The Rolling Stones more recently, but the football remains the main event. The club is looking ahead to a new stadium, but for now, the old ground is still here, and they have not left it.
