Estádio Virgílio Grassi

Rio Bananal, Brazil

The Estádio Virgílio Grassi sits in the Bairro São Sebastião of Rio Bananal, a town in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The capacity is 2,200. It is owned by the Municipal Prefecture of Rio Bananal, which initiated a renovation project in September 2023 to modernise the ageing facilities.

The ground is named after Virgílio Grassi, the man who donated the land and founded the local amateur team that eventually became Rio Bananal Futebol Clube. The professional club was established in 2007, but the exact date the stadium opened remains unclear. It is a place of simple geometry: natural grass. It has no history of being renamed; it has always been the Estádio Municipal Virgílio Grassi.

Today, the stadium serves as a home for Linhares Futebol Clube, which plays there because its own city lacks a suitable venue. The club competes in the Campeonato Capixaba Série B and the Copa Espírito Santo. Official attendance records are not kept for most matches, so there is no public figure for the largest crowd ever to pass through the gates.

The local government decided to spend money on it in 2023. The renovation was advertised through a public bidding process, Tomada de Preços No. 006/2023, seeking engineers. The final cost is not public knowledge, nor is there confirmation that the capacity will change after the work is done. It remains a modest landmark in a small town, tied to the history of amateur football in the region.
