Airdrieonians moved here in 1998 from New Broomfield. The original Airdrieonians went into liquidation in 2002, and the successor club kept the ground and, informally, the old name too — locals still sometimes call it New Broomfield, after the site it replaced.

The football attendance record here, 9,612, belongs not to Airdrieonians but to Hamilton Academical and St Mirren, who met in the 2005 Scottish Challenge Cup final. Queen of the South hosted Nordsjælland in the 2008 UEFA Cup on the same pitch, and Motherwell played Europa League ties there the following season. In 2016 East Kilbride borrowed the stadium for a Scottish Cup tie against Celtic, drawing 7,767, after their own ground failed to meet the competition's requirements.

None of that comes close to the biggest crowd the place has held: an estimated 14,000 for an Elton John concert on 24 June 2017, staged after a full repaint and an overhaul of the electrical and mechanical systems, carried out free of charge by the Moffat Group. The pitch has been artificial since the 2009–10 season, a FIFA Grade 2 3G surface that replaced the original turf.
