Gandbol-Arena
Novorossiysk, Russia
The Gandbol-Arena in Novorossiysk sits in the Abrau-Dyurso settlement. It is a functional hall built for one team, the women's handball club Chernomorochka, which ran the show in the Superliga after moving its operations to this new home. The opening in January 2024 marked a fresh start, replacing the old venues with a facility designed for the specific demands of the sport.
The interior is dominated by the court, surrounded by tiered seating that holds 3,000 spectators. The surface underfoot is not grass but the synthetic material required for the fast-paced movement of the players. The structure is straightforward: a roof overhead, lights above the action, and nothing more. There is no attempt to create a spectacle here; the focus is entirely on the game being played. The club was looking for a place to call its own before the Superliga season began, and this arena provided the necessary infrastructure.
Unlike the abandoned projects in other cities that stalled over funding and negotiations, this venue was completed and brought into use. The team took to the floor for their first home match against LADA in February of that year, fitting the schedule without delay. The arena is listed on the Federation of Handball of Russia site, a simple digital presence that reflects the practical nature of the project. It does not try to be a landmark. It is a workplace for athletes and a gathering place for supporters, held together by purpose rather than grand ambition.
