The ground carries a name the city voted for. Put to a public SMS poll, Gelora Bandung Lautan Api — Bandung Sea of Fire — took 83.3% against rival proposals including Gelora Dada Rosada and Soeratin, and replaced the working title Stadion Gedebage that had followed the site through construction.

That site sits well out of the old centre, in Gedebage on the Soekarno-Hatta bypass beside the Cileunyi-Padalarang toll road, which is why the stadium arrived as a joint municipal and provincial project: Bandung City Government under Mayor Dada Rosada built it, the West Java Provincial Government under Governor Ahmad Heryawan paid a large share, and the state contractor PT Adhi Karya did the work. Rosada inaugurated it himself.

Persib Bandung moved in in 2016 and the arrangement has not been continuous — the club played elsewhere between 2018 and 2022 before returning. Football has come back since in bursts, the Liga 2 semi-finals and final in 2017, the President's Cup in 2018 and 2022.

Capacity has come down from the 40,000 originally built to 38,000 after renovation work. A further round in 2024, funded from the national budget at around Rp 40.45 billion, went on structural repairs and an IAAF-certified running track. The pitch is Zoysia matrella, laid to FIFA standard.
