Gelora Bung Karno
The Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium retains a roof that looks like a woven bracelet. The interlocking steel trusses curve over the pitch, a shape the stadium's architect Friedrich Silaban adapted from a concept offered by President Sukarno.
The stadium underwent a complete transformation for the 2018 Asian Games. Standing terraces were removed and replaced with individual seats, a change that reduced the number of people the venue could hold. A prominent feature of the exterior is the facade lighting system installed during this renovation, which wraps around the lower tiers.
The facility has hosted significant gatherings beyond sport. Pope Francis celebrated mass at the ground in 2024. The stadium remains the central piece of the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Central Jakarta.
