The design work was done by Bureau Bontinck, and the original intention was to call it the Arteveldestadion. That name never made it onto the building. It opened as the Ghelamco Arena in July 2013, and when Ghelamco's naming contract ran out at the end of June 2023 the club simply called it the KAA Gent Arena for a season, until Planet Group took the rights in April 2024.

What it replaced explains a great deal about it. The Jules Ottenstadion dated from 1920 and held fewer than thirteen thousand; the old site went to housing, the Ecowijk Gantoise, while Gent moved into something with room for a little over twenty thousand. The attendance record was set almost immediately — the first competitive fixture, against KV Mechelen on 4 August 2013, filled it. Two weeks earlier the building had been opened by an exhibition match against VfB Stuttgart, with 2manydjs playing afterwards. A proposal to add five thousand seats surfaced around 2015 and went no further.

The pitch is a hybrid: natural grass reinforced with artificial fibre. European nights here have brought Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma and NK Rijeka. During the 2014 World Cup the ground opened as a screening venue for Belgium's matches, with Clouseau, Natalia and Milk Inc. playing between the football.
