San Siro sits inside a public park in the north-west of the city, and the walk in tells you what to expect before a ball is kicked: a spiral of external ramps winding round the concrete towers that hold up the third tier. Few clubs anywhere share a home the way Milan and Inter share this one, and the arrangement has shaped the ground itself — every stand, every corner of the bowl, has hosted both sets of colours in turn.

The bones of the place go back to a project by Alberto Cugini and Ulisse Stacchini, built at the urging of Milan president Piero Pirelli. What stands now is largely the product of work done for the 1990 World Cup, when the distinctive corner towers went up to carry a new tier without adding weight on the old lower rings — an engineering answer to a ground already hemmed in by the park around it.

It took the name of Giuseppe Meazza in 1980, a forward who played for both tenant clubs and died the year before, though almost nobody in Milan calls it anything but San Siro. The pitch itself was relaid in 2012 with a hybrid surface weaving synthetic fibres through the natural grass, a fix for a ground that stages football several times a month across two full fixture lists.

Four European Cup and Champions League finals have been played here, in 1965, 1970, 2001 and 2016, alongside matches at two World Cups and the 1980 European Championship. Bob Marley filled it in 1980, and Michael Jackson, Madonna and U2 have all played the same bowl since. In February 2026 it opened the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, one more event added to a ground that has rarely gone quiet.
