Gradski stadion Nevesinje

The Gradski stadion Nevesinje sits in a quiet corner of Republika Srpska, far from the travelling crowds that fill the larger arenas in Banja Luka. The ground stands between two rivers and the wind goes straight through it, a detail noted by locals who remember the early days when the terraces offered no protection against the autumn chill. The original structure dates back to the early twentieth century, though the precise year has been lost to time.

Faces and figures have changed little. The 2016 redevelopment brought a fresh coat of paint and new seating, followed by a second phase of work in 2019 that tightened the perimeter. Capacity remains a question mark for statisticians; some records point to 500 seats, others to 2,000, while a 2015 Radio Nevesinje report mentioned 900. The numbers do not matter much to the people who watch from the concrete steps.

FK Velež Nevesinje have played out their lives here, competing in the First League of the Republika Srpska. The club has occasionally hosted rounds of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Football Cup, such as the 2020–21 tie against FK Igman Konjic, a fixture that drew more attention than the usual league encounter. The surface is natural grass, worn down by the seasons, with no artificial replacement in sight.

The architecture is unremarkable but functional. There are no stands with corporate boxes, no electronic scoreboards towering above the pitch. The stadium has never borne a former name; it has always been the City Stadium. The address, Nemanjića bb, is known to everyone in the town, though the "bb" part means nothing to visitors. What remains is the sense of place: a ground that does not try to be anything more than a home for its own.
