Gradski stadion Subotica has carried three names before the one it holds now. It opened on 6 June 1936 as the Stadion kralja Petra, built inside the Great People's Park for a Sokol rally that drew every branch of the movement from the northern reaches of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The ground settled into the plain, unpolitical Gradski stadion — the City Stadium.

The terraces were concreted over in 1972, and new changing rooms and a gym followed in 1978, but the ground kept its old bones until 2017–2018, when a reconstruction worth 87 million dinars relaid the pitch, added a fresh athletics track and installed an LED scoreboard. Mayor Bogdan Laban has spoken since of talks over a fuller rebuild with new stands, though nothing beyond talk has followed.

None of that touched the capacity, which has fallen a long way from what the stadium held at its opening — a crowd closer to a football ground several times its current size gathered here in the 1930s.
