Große EWE Arena

The Grande EWE Arena does not look like a place built for football. It sits beside the older Kleine EWE Arena, but the two buildings wear a different skin.

This is not a cathedral of sport. It is a modern venue, built to replace the old Halls 5 and 6, and it has kept that practical spirit. It hosts the basketball team EWE Baskets Oldenburg, who fill the stands when they play here. The capacity shifts depending on whether there is a court or a stage, but the structure itself remains unchanged since it opened in 2013.

There is no brick, no arches, no history etched into the stone. Instead, there is glass and steel, and a roof that looks like a sheet of metal laid flat. When the team plays, the arena is loud. When the lights go up for a concert, the space empties of sport and fills with something else entirely.

It is the only major indoor venue of its kind in Oldenburg. The city council recently approved a modernization project for the whole complex, but the arena itself has not been rebuilt since that first opening. It stands there, quiet and functional, waiting for the next match or the next band.
