Hakametsä 2
Tampere, Finland
The first ice stadium in Finland built specifically for training purposes is in the Hakametsä district of Tampere. It is not the big arena next door, the one that hosted the World Championships, but a smaller, functional building for the teams that play there.
The ice surface is white and flat, marked with the standard red and blue lines. The boards around the rink are grey with a red stripe along the top. Wooden benches run along the sides, and there are no luxury boxes or high-tech features; it is a place for work.
The walls inside are painted a pale blue, and there are glass windows looking out from the locker room area. Advertisements for local businesses hang near the roofline. The capacity is small, 1,050 people, which means the crowd is close to the action but not overwhelming. It is where KOOVEE and the youth teams of Tappara and Ilves spend their time, away from the pressure of the main arena. The ice is artificial, kept cold by machinery that hums beneath the floor, a sound that is part of the building. It is owned by the city, and while it does not host the biggest events, it is where the next generation of players is made.
