Hàng Đẫy sits on a footprint that has carried a pitch since the 1930s, first as the ground of a physical-education school and then, from 1938, as the SEPTO field with room for 400 spectators. Everything above that lineage dates to a single rebuild: work began on 16 February 1957, and the reopened stadium was inaugurated on 24 August 1958, with children laying the turf during the ceremony. The first match followed within days — Phnom Penh against Hải Phòng, won by the Cambodian side.

Until Mỹ Đình opened in 2003, this was the national team's home ground, and its list of finals reads accordingly: the 1998 Tiger Cup final, lost 0–1 to Singapore three days after Vietnam had beaten Thailand 3–0 here in the semi-final. It has since hosted AFF Champions League finals in 2012 and 2023, National Cup finals and semi-finals, and repeated Super Cup fixtures, including the 2022 and 2023 editions.

The ground currently serves Hà Nội FC and Thể Công Viettel, and hosted Công An Hà Nội through 2023–2024. Their derby drew 11,950, the competition's record crowd at this venue. The listed capacity of 22,500 no longer applies in practice: structural damage to the upper tier of Stand B has left it closed, cutting usable capacity to around 15,000. A 2018 agreement with Bouygues Construction proposed a €250 million reconstruction — four basement levels, the pitch raised to a second tier, full roof cover — but the plan stalled over financing and has not been revived.
