The roof came off in 2019, and what went back on was painted sky blue to look like an eagle's wings. That rebuild, run for the 7th CISM Military World Games, was the largest public cultural facility project in Jianghan District under the 13th Five-Year Plan. Underneath the ground, contractors sank a two-storey car park with 750 spaces. Above it, they laid a new turf system built to a set soil permeability, cut nine entrances with security gates, and added twenty-seven categories of room — referee studios, anti-doping inspection rooms, athlete rest areas, a media centre, a sports exhibition hall.
Before any of that, the ground had already taken on international football. It staged the 2009 AFC U-19 Women's Championship , then the 2015 AFC U-16 Women's Championship , both while the venue was still in its earlier form.
The Hankou Cultural Sports Centre kept the football that stayed put — Wuhan Jiangcheng , the club that began life as Hubei Huachuang in 2000, plus Three Towns' B side and the Wuhan Jiangda women's team.
