Hardenhuish Park

Chippenham, United Kingdom

The ground sits on a slope. The pitch runs down towards Bristol Road. It has stood at this location since 1919, when Chippenham Town FC moved in after playing at several other sites. The club itself claims a foundation date of either 1873 or December 1884, though the exact year remains unclear.

What distinguishes the place is its dual life. While the football side has occupied the site for more than a century, the cricket ground at the same location hosted its first recorded match in 1902. Wiltshire County Cricket Club used the venue on-and-off during the 20th century, staging 47 Minor Counties Championship matches between 1902 and 2003. That span includes Wiltshire’s first List A match in 1964 against Hampshire.

The capacity is 3,000, with 300 seats under cover. Floodlights were installed in 1986. A new clubhouse facility opened in 2020, replacing one built in 1979. The venue is currently known as the 'Thornbury Surfacing Stadium' due to a sponsorship deal, though it has no former names on record.

Footballing memories here are modest but specific. The record attendance was 4,800 for a match against Chippenham United in the Western League in 1951. The team reached the FA Cup first round in 2019-20 and 2022-23, and they lifted the Southern League Premier Division title in 2016-17 with a league record 103 points. They also reached the FA Vase final in 1999-2000, losing to Deal Town at Wembley. These moments are not legendary in a national sense, but they define a local identity. The slope, the age, and the shared history with cricket make this ground different from the identical one down the road. It is the only ground in town.
