Havant Rugby Football Club ground
Havant, United Kingdom
The Mick Chalk Stand is an all-seater grandstand at the Hooks Lane Ground in Havant, Hampshire. It is named after a club legend. The ground itself is defined by its surface: natural grass, pipe-drained yet stubbornly prone to waterlogging, a condition that has persisted since the floodlights were installed on the 2nd XV pitch in 1997–1998.
The site has lived through several distinct eras of expansion. Original structures built by members in the 1950s gave way to a new clubhouse in 1975, which hosted a commemorative match featuring Ireland international Dick Spring. Significant extensions followed in 1993, bringing the grandstand and raising the seated capacity. Before the rugby club fully consolidated its hold, the venue was the home of Havant Town F.C. until 1982.
A notable incident occurred on December 11, 1984, when part of the old balcony collapsed during a John Player Cup match against Berry Hill, injuring approximately 30 people. The ground has also hosted higher-profile fixtures, including a Pilkington Cup match against London Irish in December 1993, a game lost 13–18. The current tenants include the 1st XV, the Sirens, and the youth sections, all playing on the same patch of turf that once hosted a junior club reaching the last 16 of the John Player Cup in 1976.
